My living room makeover…

My living room makeover…

As a part time working mum of two, a couple of years ago I turned my love of interiors in to a hobby. I’d rather buy homeware over anything else, and I’m constantly changing up our decor at home.

Our living room was one room I felt like I hadn’t quite mastered. I think it was our sofa causing the problem. It was too big for the room and it was leather, which would never be my preference but it is practical with children.

I felt like it was time for a change, so popped in to DFS and ordered us two brand new shiny (not literally) sofas! I opted for the ‘Florence’ (pewter grey) and ‘Bailey’ (dark teal velvet) both by sofa workshop, who have a limited edition line with DFS.

Bailey in teal green (top) and Florence in pewter (bottom) both from sofa workshop at DFS.

Originally my plan was to find a paint to match the green teal sofa, so I turned to trusty Farrow and Ball. I hadn’t seen a swatch of the velvet fabric so I was having to use the screen shot from the DFS website as a colour guide, risky I know! F&B green smoke seemed to be a good choice so I bought a tester pot and slapped it on the walls. Unfortunately when the sofas arrived, it just didn’t look right. The colour was beautiful so I might use it in another room but the room looked too matchy matchy. That’s when I made the decision to go with white walls and let the furniture and accessories do the talking!

Before I bought anything I used an app to create a moodboard. I do this with every room to get a feel of the colours and textures I want in there. If you are ever struggling for inspiration, just look outside. You’d be surprised how nature and landscapes can influence your interior. Failing that, there’s always Pinterest.

Hydrayngeas were my inspiration for our living room, with burgundy, blush and green as accent colours.

I added to and swapped my mood board about for weeks. I found it better to put things on there I had actually bought or similar and things I was going to buy rather than just inspirational photos. Here is my final moodboard…

Now let me just remind you what my living room used to look like…

And here is my almost finished, new and in my opinion, improved living room…

The Details…

I wanted plenty of shelving for accessories so we have used scaffolding boards for shelves.

I made a behind the sofa table from a scaffold board and three table legs from IKEA costing £2.50 each! I then got my dad to secure it to the wall using a couple of brackets.

For my accessories I turned to small businesses I had found on Instagram. The reason I did this was because I wanted the room to have character and not look like I’d gone to next and bought their A/W homeware collection.

I received this amazing gold hammered tray from the lovely ladies at Mia Fleur. Check out their Instagram page and website, you will be in your element.

You may have spotted the gorgeous forest print above my grey sofa. I chose this print because it looks a lot like where we live.

You can buy this print from The Poster Club. They have some amazing prints, I will definitely going back there for more!

As our TV is on the wall now, I had a whole arcovve to work with. I got my handy man dad to pop up another scaffold board, which meant I had more room for lovely niknaks.

One of the first things I bought was this beautiful macrame wall hanging from Shop Brintage. You can find Amy on Instagram and Etsy. I have another one of her masterpieces in my bedroom.

This incredible wooden ‘let’s get lost’ plaque is from The Little House Shop. Check out their website and Instagram page because they have some truly amazing products.

You have probably seen this calendar all over Instagram, but if you want one and aren’t sure where to get one then The Little House Shop can sort you out too!

I’ve always wanted an original barn star so I’m absolutely thrilled with this one from Lime Lace – have a look at their website and enjoy 15% off with my code ‘bettyscottage15’

It’s funny because on Friday I felt a little unsure about the room, it felt like it was missing something. Then some beautiful flowers from Bloom and Wild were delivered and as soon as I arranged them and put them on the mantle they instantly lifted the room.

It’s seriously hard to believe they can fit this many flowers in to a box that fits through your letterbox. This bouquet is called ‘Elodie’ and you can buy it HERE.

Obviously I’ve added a few vintage pieces in to the room and one thing I did find was this old trug from a local vintage shop.

Doesn’t look good for much does it? That’s why I cleaned it up and painted it with Farrow and Ball ‘setting plaster’ to create an indoor plant stand.

Isn’t she pretty?

And last but not least, I needed to spruce up the wall area our TV is now on. So I found an antique Singer sewing machine table to use as a side table and a well loved Fortnum and Mason basket for storage.

I hope you have enjoyed having a peek at my living room makeover.

Please let me know what you think😘
